20 Pre-hospital Emergency Care terms

This glossary will help you understand the word I will use in this blog.

airway
noun
The passage by which air reaches a person's lungs.
Example: He kept the man’s airway clear and blood circulating.

This is the representation of an airway close.
ambulance
noun
A vehicle specially equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from the hospital.
Example: We called an ambulance.

asystole
noun
A condition in which the heart no longer beats and usually cannot be restarted.
Example: The rhythm of this heart stops and became an asystole.

cardiac arrest
noun
A sudden, sometimes temporary, cessation of function of the heart.
Example: This patient is in a cardiac arrest.

A cardiac arrest during a soccer game.
cardiac monitor
noun
A piece of electronic equipment for continual observation of the function of the heart.
Example: The cardiac monitor is a device that paramedic use every day.

combitube
noun
A blind insertion airway device used in the pre-hospital and emergency setting. It is designed to provide an airway to facilitate the mechanical ventilation of a patient in respiratory distress.
Example: We used the combitube to open the airway of the patient.

cyanosis
noun
A bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood.
Example: We can see cyanosis around the mouth of the patient

We can see cyanosis on the extremities of the finger.
epistaxis
noun
Bleeding from the nose.
Example: Her symptoms included complete right-sided nasal obstruction, occasional epistaxis, and hemifacial pain.

glove
noun
A covering for the hand worn for protection against cold or dirt and typically having separate parts for each finger and the thumb.
Example: The paramedic use gloves for each of their interventions.

hospital
noun
An institution in which sick and injured people are given medical or surgical treatment.
Example: We are going to the hospital.

oxygen mask
noun
A device that provides a method to transfer breathing oxygen gas from storage tank to the lungs. It may cover the nose and mouth or the entire face.
Example: The patient needs an oxygen mask.

paramedic
noun
A person who is trained to assist a physician or to give first aid or other health care in the absence of a physician, often as part of a police, rescue, or firefighter squad.
Example: The paramedic came and help my dad to feel better.

patient
noun
A person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment.
Example: The patient has many symptoms.

pocket mask
noun
A device used to safely deliver rescue breaths during a cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest.
Example: During a cardiac arrest the paramedic used a pocket mask on the patient.

sphygmomanometer
noun
An instrument for measuring blood pressure and especially arterial blood pressure.
Example: The paramedic took the blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer.

stethoscope
noun
An instrument used to detect and study sounds produced in the body.
Example: The paramedic heard wheezing with his stethoscope.

stretcher
noun
A framework of two poles with a long piece of canvas slung between them, used for carrying sick, injured, or dead people.
Example: The paramedic used a stretcher to carry the patient

syncope
noun
Temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure.
Example: The patient had an episode of syncope.

vital signs
noun
They are measures of various physiological statistics in order to assess the most basic body functions.
Example: The paramedic took the vitals signs of the patient.

wheezing
adjective
A continuous whistling sound produced in the respiratory airways during breathing. For wheezes to occur, some part of the respiratory tree must be narrowed or obstructed, or airflow velocity within the respiratory tree must be heightened.
Example: The paramedic heard some wheezing.
